Review: Ice Massacre by Tiana Warner

Title: Ice Massacre

Author: Tiana Warner

Publication Date: September 18, 2014

Excerpt from Goodreads:

A mermaid’s supernatural beauty serves one purpose: to lure a sailor to his death.

The Massacre is supposed to bring peace to Eriana Kwai. Every year, the island sends its warriors to battle these hostile sea demons. Every year, the warriors fail to return. Desperate for survival, the island must decide on a new strategy. Now, the fate of Eriana Kwai lies in the hands of twenty battle-trained girls and their resistance to a mermaid’s allure.

Eighteen-year-old Meela has already lost her brother to the Massacre, and she has lived with a secret that’s haunted her since childhood. For any hope of survival, she must overcome the demons of her past and become a ruthless mermaid killer.

For the first time, Eriana Kwai’s Massacre warriors are female, and Meela must fight for her people’s freedom on the Pacific Ocean’s deadliest battleground.

I was given a complimentary copy from the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Each year, the people of Eriana Kwai have sent out twenty young boys to the ocean to fight in the Massacre. The Massacre is an event in which the young boys of Eriana Kwai must fight and kill as many mermaids as possible in order to gain back control over the ocean. In the more recent years, the Massacres have left few survivors for the people of Eriana Kwai and there has been little progress in taking back the ocean.

This year is the first year that the people of Eriana Kwai have sent young girls in the place of young boys. They believe that women will withstand the allure of the mermaids and have the largest Massacre in history.

We start off with the main character, Meela, during her last day of training before graduating and leaving for the Massacre. The night before she leaves for the Massacre, we get a flashback to the time she was a young girl and learn a secret of hers that only her parents know. We later jump forward right before she leaves for the Massacre. It seems like only of a couple of minutes after Meela and the rest of the crew set sail and…BAM! ACTION! This was when the story really took off for me.

We get constant battle with ruthless mermaids and a crew of girls that are just as ruthless. The girls are doing better than any group that has gone before them. While on the ship, Meela’s secret is threatened to be revealed. With their numbers dwindling and trust in question, Meela will have to face a being that any man has most likely never faced before her.

I have read many mermaid novels and this one is definitely at the top of my list! Ice Massacre is a fast paced, intense novel that kept me reading the moment I picked it up! I loved this book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good mermaid book or just a good book in general!

4 out of 5 stars

P.S. I just read on Goodreads that the author is working on a sequel! YAY YAY YAY!!!
