Synopsis:

Artist Beatrix Adams knows exactly how she’s spending the summer before her senior year. Determined to follow in Leonardo da Vinci’s footsteps, she’s ready to tackle the one thing that will give her an advantage in a museum-sponsored scholarship contest: drawing actual cadavers. But when she tries to sneak her way into the hospital’s Willed Body program and misses the last metro train home, she meets a boy who turns her summer plans upside down.

Jack is charming, wildly attractive . . . and possibly one of San Francisco’s most notorious graffiti artists. On midnight buses and city rooftops, Beatrix begins to see who Jack really is—and tries to uncover what he’s hiding that leaves him so wounded. But will these secrets come back to haunt him? Or will the skeletons in Beatrix’s own family’s closet tear them apart?

Review

I received this book for free via NetGalley in exchange an honest and unbiased review. Thanks to the publisher and the Sunday Street Team.

The Anatomical Shape of a Heart is a story about a girl named Beatrix Adams, Bex, who wants to one day illustrate for anatomy books. One night, Bex meets a boy named Jack. Bex and Jack instantly hit it off. They are soon spending time together and quickly become important parts of each others lives.

Bex is so unlike any other protagonist I have ever read about before. I loved how Bex was interested in anatomy. Jack, who also happened to be an artist, was interested in graffiti and typography.

Oh my. I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. The Anatomical Shape of a Heart was a beautifully written contemporary that dealt with family, love, and mental disorders. This book lightly touched on the subject of schizophrenia. This is the first book I have read that has dealt with this disorder and it was nice to receive some insight on a disorder I’m not familiar with. The romance was sweet and adorable. I adored Bex’s and Jack’s chemistry and their banter was wonderful.

I can’t recommend this book enough! I LOVE LOVE LOVE when I discover a contemporary that I enjoy. I’m so happy I got the chance to read this book and you should too! Read this book today!
