Title: A Study in Charlotte

Author: Brittany Cavallaro

Publisher: Katherine Tegan Books

Publication Date: March 1, 2016

Genres: Young Adult, Mystery, Contemporary, Retellings, Fiction, Romance, Thriller

Synopsis:

The last thing sixteen-year-old Jamie Watson–writer and great-great-grandson of the John Watson–wants is a rugby scholarship to Sherringford, a Connecticut prep school just an hour away from his estranged father. But that’s not the only complication: Sherringford is also home to Charlotte Holmes, the famous detective’s enigmatic, fiercely independent great-great-granddaughter, who’s inherited not just his genius but also his vices, volatile temperament, and expertly hidden vulnerability. Charlotte has been the object of his fascination for as long as he can remember–but from the moment they meet, there’s a tense energy between them, and they seem more destined to be rivals than anything else.

Then a Sherringford student dies under suspicious circumstances ripped straight from the most terrifying of the Holmes stories, and Jamie and Charlotte become the prime suspects. Convinced they’re being framed, they must race against the police to conduct their own investigation. As danger mounts, it becomes clear that nowhere is safe and the only people they can trust are each other.

Equal parts tender, thrilling, and hilarious, A Study in Charlotte is the first in a trilogy brimming with wit and edge-of-the-seat suspense.

Review

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest and an unbiased review. Thanks to the publisher and The Fantastic Flying Book Club.

When I first heard of A Study in Charlotte, I hopped at the chance to read it! I love a good mystery and ANYTHING involving a Holmes and a Watson is right up my alley!

James Watson has just begun prep school in America. Being so far away from home (London), he has been feeling quiet alone. James has been fascinated with Charlotte Holmes for his entire life. When James meets Charlotte at a school poker night, he is completely taken. She is more captivating than James had ever imagined. After the death of someone they both loathe, they (ironically) quickly become friends.

Charlotte is as Holmes as a Holmes could ever be. She is quick witted, brilliant, and extremely determined. James Watson is caring, loyal, and steadfast. Holmes and Watson are both the direct descendants of the real Sherlock Holmes and John Watson so it only makes sense for the two to be the best of friends.

A Study in Charlotte was such a easy read to love. From the very beginning, I was captivated. I never felt the need to figure of the “mystery,” before it was revealed, I just enjoyed following the story. I loved observing the similarities between this Holmes and Watson versus the original Holmes and Watson. A Study in Charlotte is a must read for any  Holmes and Watson fan!

  1. wow. this sounds like a really intriguing read. Usually, I’m not into books that play around with an established mythos, such as the Sherlock Holmes books, but this looks pretty good. thanks for sharing!
