Authors: Rachel Cohn & David Levihan

Publication Date: October 26, 2010

Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers

Synopsis: “I’ve left some clues for you.
If you want them, turn the page.
If you don’t, put the book back on the shelf, please.”

So begins the latest whirlwind romance from the bestselling authors of Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Lily has left a red notebook full of challenges on a favorite bookstore shelf, waiting for just the right guy to come along and accept its dares. But is Dash that right guy? Or are Dash and Lily only destined to trade dares, dreams, and desires in the notebook they pass back and forth at locations across New York? Could their in-person selves possibly connect as well as their notebook versions? Or will they be a comic mismatch of disastrous proportions?

Rachel Cohn and David Levithan have written a love story that will have readers perusing bookstore shelves, looking and longing for a love (and a red notebook) of their own.

When Dash spies a red notebook out of place at the bookstore, he decides to pick it up. What he finds inside this notebook is a mini scavenger hunt that takes him throughout the bookstore. Instead of putting the notebook back on the shelf as it instructs, Dash decides that he will send this mystery girl on a little scavenger hunt of his own. This is how the “book of dares” begins.

Ever since the divorce of Dash’s parents, Christmas is a holiday he would rather skip. Because Christmas is Lily’s favorite holiday, she is extremely disappointed when her parents decide to spend Christmas in Fuji and her brother would rather spend time with his boyfriend than her. The red notebook provides Dash and Lily something to look forward during this holiday season.

Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares is set in the dazzling city of New York during Christmastime. While I have yet to visit New York myself, I loved reading all about it. Not only were Dash and Lily wonderful characters, but many of the secondary characters were fantastic! Each chapter alternates between Dash and Lily and I enjoyed reading both perspectives.

I’m not sure what I was expecting going into this book, but I surely did not expect to laugh so much while reading this book! I found myself flying through the pages of this book because I just HAD to find out what was going to happen! This book is the absolute perfect read for the holidays and I believe that anyone who loves contemporary will love this book.
